I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Just a little reminder about Valentines day: All Valentines intended to be given out will need to be brought to the school no later than Monday February 8th so that we can have time to quarantine them until Wednesday (When they will be opened/go home).  I have posted a class list of on the Google classroom (because it is only accessibly by our class) rather than sending home a list with everyone.  

This week we have continued our work on persuasive writing.  Be prepared for your child to test out some of the persuasive techniques we are learning about for our writing.  It seems like quite a few of them might be inquiring about a later bedtime or a new pet in the near future.

Now that the new term begins on Monday, we are able to get started with our new science unit.  This unit will be focusing on two topics: Wheels and Levers, and Building Devices that and Vehicles that Move.  At the beginning of the year at meet the teacher night we mentioned that there will be times where students will be asked to bring some supplies, this unit will require a bit of that.  It will usually only be items from the recycling, but there will be a lot of opportunity for the students to create their own designs and some of those might require additional supplies.

This week in Social Studies we looked at the purposes of stories other than entertainment.  We learned about how all cultures have stories that help explain things to children that they might not otherwise be able to understand. More specifically, we looked at Blackfoot stories that explained why the mountains and trees are the way they are now. Most of the students had stories to share about things they were told when they were little that helped remind them of certain rules.  I highly suggest asking your child if they shared a story, some were pretty funny.

Just a quick reminder that this week is a full week of school, with next week being an extra short one (No school Thursday the 11th or Friday the 12th).

 This past week of school the grade 4s wrote both a math and a science test.  Overall, both tests were incredibly successful.  Those that reviewed their multiplication over the weekend definitely benefitted from the extra practice.  Those who feel like they could improve on these tests will be given the opportunity to answers some additional questions in the next week or two, they just have to let me know that they would like to, and we will arrange a date. There was a large focus this week in social studies.  As we continue to explore the Blackfoot People's history on this land, we have been looking more into perspective taking.  The students took part in an activity based on the book "Seven Blind Mice" by Ed Young. The Grade 4s were tasked with combining the perspectives of the 7 blind mice to try to determine what it was that the mice had found.  Ask your child how it went! Welcome to the classroom blog! I will be posting weekly updates about what is going on in the classroom each week, as well as any important upcoming information. The majority of student work will be posted in Google Classroom, so please make sure that your student is able to log into the Google Classroom from home.  If your student is unable to log in from home, please email me and we will find a solution. Congratulations to everyone for making it through the first month of the school year!  This week we busy learning about what we can do around the school and at home to help reduce the amount of waste that we produce.  We sorted through our classroom garbage and recycling to see if we have our waste program dialed in.  We found some fun surprises in the two bins!  The students have been learning more about what items can be recycled, composted, and what must be thrown out.  Next week we will start to dive deeper into what happens to the items we toss into the green bin.                                                         In Literacy, we’ve continued to focus on adding detail our sentences.  The grade 4s have also begun to explore what constitutes a quality paragraph(dissimilar to this one).
