November 6

I hope everyone had a great Halloween weekend!  The student’s costumes were wonderful!

Science

We have built our worm bin to explore the decomposers doing their thing! Vermicomposting is supposed to be a wonderful and relatively smell-free way to dispose of scraps from our lunches.  Your child may ask if they can bring egg-shells from hard boiled eggs into class.  This is to help neutralize the pH of the soil from all of the food scraps in order to keep the worms happy and healthy.  We have wrapped up the bulk of the Waste in Our World unit, although it will still be incorporated throughout many points of the year. We are now moving on to our Light and Shadow unit.

Art

The students worked on their shading skills using chalk pastels, while doing their best to create the illusion of depth through strategic placing of their pumpkins and using different sizes.  I hope we managed to send your students home without too much chalk pastel on their clothing!

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are beginning to explore natural resources and why they are so important to Alberta.  The students have begun to plan some post-apocalyptic descriptive writing in which they imagine what it would be like if one of our natural resources started to run out.

We have begun to start incorporating some weekly spelling words into the learning take place in the classroom.  The weekly word lists will be posted in the google classroom and will be tested on every Friday.  Throughout the week, the students will participate in short activities that include the words to ensure a deeper learning of the spelling and their definition.

Picture retakes, for those of you who would like them, and for those students who missed picture day the first time around, will take place this upcoming Monday November 9th.

We were lucky enough to have a digital guest join us this week.  The Grade 4s got to learn about coding from a professional.  The students used Scratch (which they now have an account that they can use from home) to learn about block coding.

Your child should also have brought home a notice for an upcoming virtual field-trip for our Light and Shadow unit.  If there are any questions about that, feel free to email me at jhwaters@cbe.ab.ca and I will help you out!

Next week there is no school on November 11th due to Remembrance day.  The grade 4s will take part in a digital assembly on Tuesday November 10th.  They will help to help build the feeling of community that I know is missing between the classes this year, all the while exploring Remembrance Day. We will have poppies and a donation jar if anyone would like to donate to the Poppy Fund.

Lastly, you will be receiving emails (if you haven't already) regarding parent teacher conferences which take later this month.  Don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

Enjoy the weekend!

Mr. Waters
