I wanted to start this week's blog by thanking everyone for being so incredible about all of the covid protocols.  Everyone's attention to the all of the rules and procedures and the students' understanding has allowed us to function like a somewhat normal classroom.   This week in Science, our Waste in Our World unit continued looking at the food Chain.  We explored the Sun's role in the the food chain and where producers, consumers, and decomposers participate.  The students have used an online program called Kahoot to review and test their knowledge.  Ask them about Kahoot.  In Literacy, the grade 4s have put themselves into the shoes of a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch.  They are creating a descriptive/persuasive essay to convince potential buyers not to buy them.  They are expanding upon three flaws with their pumpkins that might save them from becoming a jack-o-lantern this halloween. The Grade 4s showed their persistence with an open ended addition questions.  In sm

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend! Here's some of what we did this week: In Science, we finally wrapped up our experiment to see whether or not food we might find in our lunches would biodegrade (and how long we could bare to look at rotting food on our wall).  Ask your child what observations they made about the following pictures: We are beginning to explore the food chain and the different participants in it.  On Friday we dissected barn owl pellets to answer the question: What type of diet does a barn owl have? This is the grade 4s first look into dissections they will do in biology classes in the coming years.  Ask your child what they found today! For any grade 4s that missed the dissection today, we will schedule a time for them to complete it in the near future. In Social Studies/Art we created the Alberta Shield/Provincial flag using water colours and fine-tipped sharpies.  Take a look at the Rocky Mountains, rolling Foothills, and golden prairies.

Congratulations to everyone for making it through the first month of the school year!  This week we busy learning about what we can do around the school and at home to help reduce the amount of waste that we produce.  We sorted through our classroom garbage and recycling to see if we have our waste program dialed in.  We found some fun surprises in the two bins!  The students have been learning more about what items can be recycled, composted, and what must be thrown out.  Next week we will start to dive deeper into what happens to the items we toss into the green bin.                                                         In Literacy, we’ve continued to focus on adding detail our sentences.  The grade 4s have also begun to explore what constitutes a quality paragraph(dissimilar to this one). If you check google classroom, your child should be completed, or almost completed, their first research assignment on a natural region of Alberta. The students were tasked to find out what type
