December 18th

Congratulations to everyone for making it to Winter break!

This week was filled with seasonal activities.  The grade 4s did a wonderful job of creating their cookie jars, and are starting to show a solid understanding of fractions (even adding fractions!). Here are the directions for finishing the cookie recipe at home, in case they get misplaced:

  • In a large bowl, whisk 1/2 cup of melted and cooled unsalted butter, 1 large egg, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Add the contents of the jar and gently stir with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until combined (dough will be crumbly). Chill for 30 minutes.
  • Form golf ball sized portions of dough, pressing firmly as you form the ball. Place the dough balls onto lined baking sheets. Bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are set and the centres of the cookies are still slightly underdone. Place baking sheets on a rack to cool.

In Science we explored how light interacts with mirrors, including concave and convex mirrors.  When we return to class after the winter break we will wrap up our unit on light and shadow with a few more experiments.

In Math we have been diving deeper into multiplication.  The students have been developing their skills using both the traditional algorithm and an open array to solve 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication questions.  When we return from the break we will begin to look at 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication.  If you are looking for something to do with your child over the break, ensuring that they have decent recall for multiplication facts up to 9x9 will ensure that they are most successful in the coming math unit.

In PE the students have been working on creative dance.  If you check the Google Classroom you will find a link to their performance.

Your child should have brought home with them a package of material with them today.  These papers are for them to use during online classes the week of January 4-8.  It is to be completed along side of their Google Classroom activities, but I will cover that with them the morning of December 4th.

I will send out more information about the online learning for that week the weekend before we start up.  You should have received an email from Barb yesterday about the online meet times for the students.  If you didn't, let me know and I will make sure you get a copy.

I hope everyone has a wonderful winter break!

Mr. Waters
